Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade led the inauguration of the highly
improved airport, which is part of the Build, Build, Build (BBB)
infrastructure program of the Duterte administration.
The development of the Calbayog airport is divided into two phases. Phase 1
includes the construction of the new Passenger Terminal Building (PTB), new
apron, new taxiway, drainage system, and site development; phase 2 includes
the widening of the runway, apron expansion, strip grade correction, slope
correction, runway safety end area (RESA), VPA and security fence.
According to CAAP Area VIII, Calbayog airport, with its increased passenger
capacity, will be able to handle 450 passengers a day from only 76
passengers prior to the modernization.
The airport will also serve as a complimentary airport of Tacloban Airport.
The new developments allowed Calbayog Airport to now handle jet aircraft
operations.
On May 5, national flag carrier Philippine Airlines is set to launch flights
between Manila and Calbayog. The weekly flights tp Calbayog will be on-board
the flag carrier's 86-seat De Havilland Dash 8-400 aircraft, as confirmed by
a representative from PAL Corporate Communications.
