PAL welcomes 2020 with 8 new routes

Aviation Updates Philippines – Philippine Airlines, the nation's flag carrier, sets off the year 2020 to a great start as it plans to launch at least eight (8) new domestic and international flights within the year. Some notable international services are set to resume in Summer 2020 as part of the carrier's massive expansion plans.

PAL furthers its presence in the Philippines and international markets with the introduction of flights on the following routes: Davao to Iloilo (January 1), Clark to Quanzhou (January 16), Manila to Pagadian (March 1), Davao to Manado (March 29), Manila to Perth (March 30), Zamboanga to Kota Kinabalu (March 29), Cebu to Los Angeles (May 2), and Manila to Seattle (May 3).

For the domestic sector, Philippine Airlines, through its subsidiary PAL Express, will now launch its much-awaited Manila-Pagadian service on-board the Airbus A320-200 aircraft starting March 1. This route is currently served by Cebu Pacific Air 11 times weekly.

Davao and Zamboanga will both see its first international flights operated by Philippine Airlines as PAL Express introduces scheduled services to Manado and Kota Kinabalu, respectively. Just last year, Garuda Indonesia commenced its Davao-Manado route on-board the ATR 72-600 twice a week. Although there have been plans to mount international services from Zamboanga before, this is the first time it is pushing through.

On a piece of bigger news, PAL's 2020 outlook also sees the resumption of Manila-Perth and Cebu-Los Angeles service.

To recall, the national flag carrier served the Cebu-Los Angeles sector since March 15, 2016, coinciding with the airline's 75th founding anniversary. However, PAL announced the temporary suspension of the route on May 30, 2017, due to low yields.

The launch of Cebu-Los Angeles back then was part of PAL's U.S. expansion plan. It offered the Airbus A340-300 for the former service, but this time, it will be operated by its Boeing 777-300ER thrice weekly.

On the other hand, Philippine Airlines will resume services to another Australian destination this year. Manila-Perth flights are scheduled to commence on March 30, 2020, on-board PAL's Airbus A321neoLR aircraft. Flights will operate every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday.

For another exciting news, Philippine Airlines plans to launch its Seattle service starting May 3 this year. Flights to PAL's newest U.S. destination will be on-board the Airbus A350-900 aircraft flying thrice weekly.

More details to follow on this since reservations were not opened yet. However, Ms. Cielo Villaluna, PAL Spokesperson confirmed that this route is indeed in the works.

This is a very significant move for PAL since this service can be supported by a great number of Filipinos residing in the state. It can be known that PAL's services to the U.S. are much profitable compared to other long-haul international routes.

As PAL continues to aim for its 5-star airline goal, these new flights will surely broaden the airline's reach in the international sector. These new flights are expected to augment PAL's continued expansion plans in the future.

Within the year, we can expect more routes to be announced as more aircraft arrive. Currently, PAL has an outstanding order for 14 more Airbus A321neo SR aircraft. The planned Delhi service resumption last year, which was eventually axed, could eventually lead to fruition.

Meanwhile, PAL is rumored to acquire more long-haul aircraft this year. The national flag carrier may exercise its remaining options for six more Airbus A350-900 aircraft, or even possibly, the longer Airbus A350-1000 variant.
