The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) is taking active measures to prepare for Super Typhoon Mawar, also known as “Betty,” and is coordinating with stakeholders. The typhoon is expected to pass through the northwestern portion of Luzon by Friday or Saturday morning.
CAAP-operated airports are preparing for possible harsh weather conditions. Tuguegarao Airport has already assisted in the delivery of 1,000 boxes of relief goods from the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DWSD) Region 2 via C-130 aircraft from Tuguegarao to Basco Airport in preparation for the coming super typhoon.
Tuguegarao Airport is taking precautionary steps in preparation for the upcoming super typhoon, according to Mary Sulyn Sagorsor, the CAAP Area Center 2 Manager.
In a message, Sagorsor mentioned that they are implementing measures like clearing waterways and canals, as well as trimming branches of trees near the Passenger Terminal Building, particularly in the arrival area and other parts within the airport grounds.
CAAP has initiated coordination meetings with stakeholders to ensure a synchronized disaster risk reduction response. Airport personnel are positioned and ready to implement necessary measures to safeguard the facilities and ensure the safety of passengers and personnel.
CAAP-operated airports are often well-prepared in the event of flight delays or possible cancellations brought by natural calamities, and utmost care is usually provided to affected passengers. The public is advised to stay informed and contact their respective airlines for updates on flight schedules and any changes that may arise due to the typhoon.
Based on the 11:00 AM bulletin of Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), the center of the super typhoon’s eye is located 2,065 kilometers east of southeastern Luzon. Mawar was packing maximum sustained winds of 185 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center, with gustiness reaching up to 230 kph.
Mawar has intensified into a super typhoon early Thursday morning, and it may enter the country’s weather monitoring area on Friday evening or Saturday morning.
