The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) has implemented heightened security measures across all 42 commercial airports today, October 6, in response to a bomb threat received via email. The threat specifically targets aircraft departing from Manila to Puerto Princesa, Mactan-Cebu, Bicol, and Davao International Airports.
MGen. Ricardo C. Banayat, AFP (Ret.), Assistant Director General II of the CAAP Security and Intelligence Service (CSIS), issued a Memorandum directing all CAAP airports and area centers to increase security personnel to manage the expected surge in passenger and vehicle traffic. This proactive measure aims to ensure the safety of passengers, airport personnel, and airport facilities.
In addition to these actions, the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) has also taken steps to enhance security at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA). In their press statement issued on October 6, 2023, the MIAA reassures the traveling public that they have instituted measures to safeguard NAIA passengers, flights, and facilities.
The MIAA has put foot and mobile patrols in place, and K9 units are conducting rounds of the Terminals as added measures to their already established day-to-day protocols. They are in close coordination with the Philippine National Police Aviation Security Unit (PNP AVSEU) and other relevant government law enforcement units responsible for validating any threats to national security.
It is important to note that there are no expected impacts on scheduled flights, and both CAAP and MIAA want to ensure the traveling public that protocols are in place to guarantee everyone’s safety and security.
The enhanced security measures at all 42 commercial airports, along with the efforts of the MIAA at NAIA, reflect the commitment of the Philippine authorities to maintaining the safety and security of all those who use their airports. Passengers are strongly advised to arrive at the airport at least three hours before their scheduled flights and to cooperate fully with security personnel while remaining vigilant. Safety and security remain top priorities for both CAAP and MIAA, and these measures are being taken to safeguard all airport users.
