Cebu Pacific has become the first airline to utilize new ground equipment at Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA) designed to reduce carbon emissions and improve operational efficiency.

In a ceremonial plug-in event on August 14, 2024, a Cebu Pacific A321neo aircraft arriving from Narita (Tokyo) became the first to utilize MCIA’s newly installed bridge-mounted equipment (BME) system.

This technology, which includes a fixed power unit (FPU) and a pre-conditioned air (PCA) unit, provides ground power and cabin cooling without relying on the aircraft’s auxiliary power unit (APU), which traditionally runs on jet fuel.

“Cebu Pacific fully supports Mactan Cebu International Airport’s ground power initiatives. This represents a crucial step in creating a sustainable future for Philippine aviation. We are honored to be the first airline to use this technology at MCIA,” said Lei Apostol, Cebu Pacific Vice President for Customer Service Operations.

MCIA is the first airport in the Philippines to implement FPU and PCA units. The system is installed under the Passenger Boarding Bridge for easy access during aircraft servicing.

“International airports like Hong Kong, Zurich, Dublin and Munich have adopted these innovative solutions to minimize their ecological footprint, and MCIA is thrilled to join these airports and hopeful about its impact in the global sustainability movement,” said Athanasios Titonis, CEO of Aboitiz InfraCapital GMR Megawide Cebu Airport Corporation.

According to the budget carrier, the use of BME is expected to reduce fuel consumption, APU maintenance costs, carbon emissions, and airport noise levels, while also improving operational safety and efficiency.

“Being the second busiest airport in the country, we want to make sure to manage our carbon footprint and maintain good air quality for both passengers and workers in the airport. This is why we highly encourage airlines to use FPU and PCA units,” said Julius Neri, Jr., Mactan-Cebu International Airport Authority General Manager.
