According to a report from the VN Express, the Vietnam flag carrier received approval for the resumption of international flights to the fifteen routes, with the first nine from January 1. The next six routes will be started from January 26.

The first nine routes that will see flights started come January 1 are to the following destinations: Bangkok, Beijing/Guangzhou, Phnom Penh, San Francisco or Los Angeles, Seoul, Singapore, Taipei, Tokyo, and Vientiane. The start of ticket sales on the routes are pending approval from aviation authorities .

For the second phase, the airline plans to add Frankfurt, Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur, Moscow, Paris, and Sydney to its flight plans.

The resumption of regularly scheduled international flights comes nearly two years since Vietnam closed its borders and grounded inbound flights in March 2020. The country has since only allowed citizens, foreign experts, investors, and highly-skilled workers to enter on special flights.

Travelers arriving into Vietnam will be required to comply with the local guidelines set by the country's health ministry. Fully vaccinated travelers and those who have recovered from COVID-19 will need to isolate for three days instead of spending a week at centralized quarantine facilities. Arriving passengers – except children below the age of two – must have a negative PCR test taken within 72 hours before departure.
