Singapore Airlines airlifts first COVID-19 vaccine shipment in Asia

Monday evening, a Singapore Airlines Boeing 747-412F(SCD) freighter aircraft
landed at Singapore Changi as flight SQ-7979 from Brussels, Belgium. Inside the
aircraft was probably the world's most valuable cargo at this moment — the
COVID-19 vaccine.
In a press release, Singapore Airlines said the COVID-19 vaccines were flown
on-board a scheduled freighter flight from Brussels, Belgium direct to
Singapore Changi.
The vaccines were prioritized upon loading at its departure point and were
given similar precedence when they were unloaded in Singapore. A trial run
of the COVID-19 vaccine shipment was completed two days prior.
Immediately after unloading, the shipment was transported to SATS’s
cold-chain facility, Coolport, for storage and transport. The shipment is
highly delicate, given it needs to be temperature-controlled for the entire
duration; hence, there's a need for special containers and transport
mechanisms.
Mr. Chin Yau Seng, Senior Vice President Cargo, SIA, said: “The delivery
of this first batch of Covid-19 vaccines to Singapore is an important
milestone in the fight against Covid-19, and we are honoured to be able
to play a part in this. It also served to demonstrate SIA’s and the
Singapore air hub’s readiness for the very important job of transporting
and distributing Covid-19 vaccines internationally.”
This delivery on Monday marks the first vaccine to be delivered in Asia.
