China Airlines to retire, sell its remaining Boeing 747s
Aviation Updates Philippines – Taiwan-based China Airlines is planning to retire and sell its remaining Boeing 747 jets on its fleet within the first half of 2021.

According to reports from Taiwan's Central News Agency (CNA- Focus Taiwan) and FlightGlobal, China Airlines is has commissioned GA Telesis' aircraft asset management unit to remarket and sell its remaining four Boeing 747-400s. Deliveries are scheduled to take place starting in the first quarter of 2021.
The four 747s involved are currently in storage (MSMs 33734, 33735, 33736, 33737), and were delivered between 2004 and 2005. Among the four jets, 33737 (B-18215) was the last passenger model of the 747-400 to be manufactured.
While the airline is set to retire its passenger Boeing 747s, according to Planespotters.net the company continues to operate a fleet of 17 Boeing 747-400F freighters which were delivered between 2000 and 2007.
Since 2014, China Airlines has been gradually phasing out the 747s and replacing them with new and more fuel efficient Boeing 777-300ERs and Airbus A350-900s.
The move was made amid the COVID-19 pandemic, with China Airlines reporting a net loss of NT $707 million (~USD $24.76 million) during the third quarter of the year (July-September). During the first nine months of the year, the airline reported a net loss of NT $2.022 billion (~USD $70.8 million).
