Cebu Pacific's 1Aviation to retrench 1,000 workers
Aviation Updates Philippines – The ground handling services firm of Cebu Pacific, 1Aviation is retrenching
more than 1,000 workers as airlines ache from the humongous effects of
the COVID-19 pandemic to the travel and tourism industry.
1Aviation Groundhandling Services Corp. said in a statement from GMA News
Online: “With a heavy heart, we are left with no other recourse but to let
go of 25% of our total workforce. Their last day as employees will be on
July 20, 2020.”
The company currently has 5,000 employees, 25 percent of which will be laid
off starting next month. To recall, 1Aviation sacked 400 workers in April as
the industry remains stagnant over the cancellation of domestic and
international flights.
“This unprecedented and uncertain situation with COVID-19 will continue to
impact the aviation industry for many months ahead. Most forecasts show that
it will take about two years before the aviation industry recovers from the
impact of the COVID-19 pandemic,” 1Aviation’s Jefferson Cheng said.
1Aviation’s profitability is deeply anchored on the strength of the aviation
industry, being a ground handling firm for aircraft. Due to the stoppage of
most flights since March this year, the main revenue generator for the
company ceased, hence, leaving hundreds jobless for some time.
However, the company reassured the affected employees’ welfare would be
“take care of.” 1Aviation will prioritize the hiring of the affected
employees once things go back to normal for aviation in the future.
