PAL, Cebu Pacific extend flight cancellations until May 15
Aviation Updates Philippines – Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific confirmed Friday the cancellation of flights from May 1, 2020, to May 15, 2020, in view of the extension of the enhanced community quarantine which was supposed to end on April 30, 2020.
In a televised address to the Filipino nation, President Rodrigo Roa Duterte announced the extension of the community quarantine in Metro Manila until Friday, May 15, 2020, in a recommendation of the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases.
In an advisory dated April 24, 2020, Philippine Airlines announced the cancellation of domestic and international flights until May 15, 2020. PAL expects to resume flight operations the day after once given go signal from Philippine authorities.
"Regular, commercial flights of the PAL Group remain suspended until May 15. Should the lockdown be lifted by end-day May 15, there will be a gradual and calibrated resumption of operations starting May 16," PAL spokesperson Cielo Villaluna tweeted.
Meanwhile, Gokongwei-led budget carrier Cebu Pacific likewise confirmed the suspension of domestic and international air services until May 15, 2020. However, the Cebu Pacific Group reassured it will continue operating cargo flights to cope with the demand.
"We will provide updates on when we will restart passenger operations as soon as possible," Cebu Pacific remarked on the resumption of flights in the future.
Philippines AirAsia, on the other hand, has yet to release a statement with regards to their flight operations for May 2020.
Low-risk areas, however, will see a relaxed version of the quarantine which authorities now call the "general community quarantine". Cebu and Davao, the major cities in the country, have been recommended for another 15-day extension of the enhanced community quarantine until mid-May.
These enhanced community quarantines, akin to a lockdown, have affected air travel and demand in the Philippines. One of the first to restrict all commercial flights outside Luzon is Davao, the main gateway to Mindanao, which resulted in the cancellation of over 300 flights per week.
