Philippines suspends all flights from Luzon
Aviation Updates Philippines – To combat the rising number of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) infected individuals in the Philippines, the COVID-19 Inter-Agency Task Force announced Monday that it is suspending all mass transportation on the island of Luzon—including domestic and international air transportation—effective immediately.
In a televised nationwide address, President Rodrigo Roa Duterte said: “I am placing the entire mainland of Luzon under quarantine until April 12, 2020, coinciding with the entire end of the Holy Week. Let me make myself clear, this is not martial law.”
An advisory from the Philippines Department of Transportation (DOTr) released some guidelines with regards to the now-enforced enhanced community quarantine. According to the advisory, the government orders shall take effect starting midnight of March 17, 2020, to last until midnight of April 13, 2020.
The transportation department has stated, under the new guidelines, only outbound flights carrying foreigners and tourists are allowed to push through while inbound flights may only carry repatriated Filipinos. Furthermore, Filipinos are no longer allowed to leave the country.
However, air transportation of uniformed personnel for official business, flights carrying medical supplies for the country's COVID-19 operations, and other humanitarian reasons are allowed to push through.
The Philippine President, tonight, imposed an enhanced community quarantine in the entire island of Luzon as efforts continue to mitigate the spread of the disease. More stringent measures are being enforced on the island such as a sterner home quarantine procedure, suspension of all mass transportation systems, and increased police and military visibility in government-mandated checkpoints.
