Cebu Pacific Group suspends almost 3,000 flights due to COVID-19
Aviation Updates Philippines – The Philippines' largest airline, Cebu Pacific Air, and its subsidiary Cebgo have recently announced the cancellation of its entire flight operations system in support of the government's effort to stabilize the increasing numbers of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) infections in the Philippines.
An article from Routesonline's AirlineRoute revealed that the Cebu Pacific Group had forcibly canceled around 2,632 domestic and international flights in the country from March 19, 2020, until April 14, 2020, as mandated by the Philippine government.
According to data from OAG, a global travel data provider in the UK, Cebu Pacific canceled 1,796 domestic flights and 286 international flights. Most of the flight cancellations hail from the airline's domestic hubs in Manila, Cebu, Clark, and Davao.
Meanwhile, Cebgo, which operates the group's fleet of ATR 72-600 and ATR 72-500F aircraft, canceled 550 flights all in all. However, the cargo aircraft operations of Cebgo remain operational as tracked on FlightRadar24.com.
On Tuesday, Cebu Pacific's Chief Executive Officer Lance Gokongwei, in a letter to his employees, made a "difficult decision" to suspension all passenger flights of the Cebu Pacific Group effective today until April 14, 2020.
"We have tried our best to keep our operations and flights intact over the past few days. However, we understand that the restrictions set forth by the Philippine and international government bodies are for the benefit of everyJuan. With that, we are in full support of these measures even as our business and our people's livelihoods are affected," Gokongwei said.
The Philippines has declared a state of calamity and a state of public health emergency to help organize a nationwide system to rightly address the global pandemic. On the island of Luzon, an enhanced community quarantine was imposed to "limit movement" to individuals.
As of March 19, 2020, the Philippines Department of Health (DOH) has reported a total of 202 infections of the COVID-19 in the country—most of which are now local transmissions. The disease has already claimed the lives of 17 individuals; however, the number of recovered cases is now at 7.
