Survey: Mactan-Cebu is PH's most improved airport in 2019

Aviation Updates Philippines – Data from the survey initiated by Aviation Updates Philippines (AUP) further ascertained Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA) as the Philippines' Most-Improved Airport for the year 2019, and quite possibly, for the whole decade.

Mactan-Cebu led the polls with 81.25 points from 64 online respondents in AUP's Philippine Aviation Forum on Facebook. The Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Manila tied with Iloilo International Airport both at 7.81 points.

Since GMR-Megawide signed the concession agreement with the Department of Transportation (DOTr) to operate MCIA, much has changed then with improved air connectivity to more international and domestic destinations, improved airside and landside facilities, a more passenger-centered customer service, among others.

The entry of GMR-Megawide Cebu Airport Corporation to the aviation industry also greatly benefited the Philippine economy, especially Cebu's, as it offered more jobs and opportunities to locals during the construction of the MCIA Terminal 2.

Alongside the construction of Terminal 2 in 2016, the old Terminal 1, now destined to cater domestic travelers, got a major facelift as renovations continue up until today. It once serviced both international and domestic flights when it was constructed in 1990 capable of handling six aircraft through its boarding bridges and more through its remote aircraft stands.

The MCIA Terminal 2, designed by Integrated Design Associates, is one of the greatest feats of the Philippine aviation industry. Dubbed as the world's first international resort airport, the new concourse won the top prize at the recently-concluded World Architecture Festival in The Netherlands just last month.

The terminal's "simple and elegant" architecture was lauded by the event's judges noting that "[t]his is a simple and elegant new airport that uses many locally-sourced materials. It is integrated into the local area through the development of a local hub and a landscape plan."

Mactan-Cebu also has a powerful social media campaign, making it easily recognizable globally and being on par with other international airports in the region. Aside from the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA), only Cebu Airport handles social media and websites professionally and proactively as it should be.

Airport visitors and guests are also welcomed by occasionally organized shows at both terminals with the latest being the MCIA Christmas Circus which brought an entire circus filled with joyful performances inside an airport.

No doubt, MCIA is this decade's most-improved airport. Although the Ninoy Aquino International Airport and Clark International Airport both improved this year, it still lags what Cebu has to offer. With Clark's Terminal 2 finishing off, the tides might slowly turn soon.
