To Philippines with Love! AirAsia Group donates $2.17 million for Typhoon Haiyan victims
(Updated, 1 time) Aviation Updates Philippines - AirAsia Group donated a total of ₱97,427,616 to all Typhoon Haiyan victims. The donation was from 75 generous countries for the AirAsia Group's campaign, 'To Philippines with Love'.
"We want to regenerate the economy here and help the people stand back on their feet," Group chief executive officer, Tan Sri Tony Fernandes, told a media conference today at the domestic airport in Tacloban city, one of worst-hit areas by typhoon Haiyan.
The Philippine Red Cross would build 345 homes in Panay using funds which was donated by AirAsia Foundation. The total received funds by Philippine Red Cross will amount to ₱46 million.
“We believe that for people to get their lives back on track, it is crucial that they have jobs and the opportunity to earn an income. The livelihood projects that we support also help restore damaged supply chains to address the problems of inflation and shortages in typhoon-affected areas,” Fernandes added.

AirAsia Group CEO said, "This is our small contribution for you [Typhoon Haiyan victims] to dream again."
AirAsia said that the campaign was launched in six weeks, from November 16 to December 31. “We express our deepest gratitude to guests who contributed generously to this fund-raising effort which exceeded all our expectations. We started this campaign as an expression of ASEAN unity for survivors who lost so much and we are incredibly touched to find that the campaign received donations from people in 75 countries all over the world. AirAsia is proud to match this donation and ensure that every cent goes to rebuilding lives,” AirAsia Group chief executive officer Tony Fernandes said.
The Habitat for Humanity will receive a total of ₱37.4 million to construct homes in Tacloban. The houses can withstand a magnitude 8 earthquake and 250 kilometer per hour windspeed.

AirAsia Zest, after the typhoon, offered 250,000 free seats across all AirAsia Zest's routes for family members or friends to look for the missing people in Tacloban.
AirAsia was one of the first commercial carriers to operate humanitarian flights, carrying close to 5,000 relief workers and survivors as well as 400 tonnes of aid items to Tacloban, Cebu and Kalibo, the statement said.
Organizations to receive this are Philippine Red Cross, Habitat for Humanity, Hapinoy Project Bagong Araw and Rags2Riches, Inc. to rebuilt 500 homes and support livelihood opportunities for Philippines typhoon survivors.

After the disaster, AirAsia Zest was the first commercial airline to restore their flights to Tacloban. Today, AirAsia Zest is flying to Tacloban 3 times a day.
